Every hole matched to the official card and graded by our own engine. The tour file names no clubs and no pins, so those rules are not graded here. No player is named.

The Coaching Blueprint · ranked by strokes a round

What to coach first

  • 1 · 1.8Fewer bogeys and doubles: 1.4 vs 2.6 bogeys; 0.13 vs 0.72 strokes to doubles.
  • 2 · 1.1Birdie conversion: 42% vs 33% of greens hit.
  • 3 · 0.7The reset hole: another bogey after a bogey, 4% vs 19%.
  • 4 · 0.7Par 5s on in three: 90% vs 83%; 40% greens at about 240 yd.
  • 5 · 0.6Trouble off the card: Clutch Factor Ball Striking 85% vs 62%.
  • 6 · 0.3Inside 6 feet: missed one in ten vs one in six from 3–6 ft.
  • 7The start: over par after six holes, 9% vs 27% of rounds.
  • 8 · 0.2Inside 40 feet: three-putts a round, 0.27 vs 0.47.
  • 9 · 0.1Short par 4s: driven inside 40 yd, −0.74 vs −0.26 laying back.
  • 10The week, not the talent: the same winners in other weeks, +3.4 vs +0.3 a round.

Strokes a round = the gap in that situation × how often the rest of the field faces it. They overlap, so they do not add up.

The Coaching Blueprint · 1–5

What to say, and what to plan

1 · Fewer bogeys and doubles · 1.8 a round

Say: winners take the big number out. Plan: the worst case on every tee is a bogey, never a double. Review the doubles first.

2 · Birdie conversion · 1.1

Say: when you get there, score. Plan: long approaches mean the irons are the work; close ones, the putter.

3 · The reset hole · 0.7

Say: the hole after a bogey has one job, a par. Plan: normal club, fully committed, middle of the green.

4 · Par 5s · 0.7

Say: the one green almost everyone can hit in regulation. Plan: lay up from the fairway, as close as it allows; two dead zones, 40–74 and 121+.

5 · Trouble · 0.6

Say: a bad lie already cost the margin. Plan: carry by 15 or lay back by 15; back to a normal lie, the bogey before the double.

The Coaching Blueprint · 6–10

Smaller numbers, still winning golf

6 · Inside 6 feet · 0.3

Say: shots you already own. Plan: every putting session starts inside 6 feet until it holds.

7 · The start

Say: you don’t need the lead, you need the plan. Plan: the first six holes level or better, on the low-stress option.

8 · Inside 40 feet · 0.2

Say: for most golfers inside 40 feet is a great shot. Plan: aim at the part of the green that leaves 40 feet or less.

9 · Short par 4s · 0.1

Say: inside 40 yards is a good result. Plan: the player’s call with no water or out of bounds in play; laying back stays the plan.

10 · The week

Say: discipline is the difference, and it can be coached. Plan: the same plan Thursday and Sunday.

What other sports measure

They measure the moment, not just the total

  • BasketballClutch time: the last five minutes with the score within five. Every stat is cut to those minutes.
  • FootballExpected points added and success rate: was each play better than expected from that spot?
  • OursGolf’s clutch moments are the holes after a mistake and the finish in contention, counted from a scorecard any player has.

Shot value against expected already exists in golf. The moment after a mistake does not. That is ours to own.
